Edna M. Manning, 92

November 24, 2015

Edna M. Manning, 92, returned to her Lord on Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at Willow Valley Lakeside. She and her husband, John R. Manning, were married 71 years on March 18, 2015. Her father told her to wait until she was 21 to wed and she did by marrying the day after her 21st birthday. Born in Philadelphia to George and Emma First, Edna attended David Birney School in Logan, Olney High School and graduated at the top of her class from Pierce Business School. She was hired as secretary for Mather and Co., insurer of government and commercial vessels and during World War II, Edna was employed as executive secretary for the Commanding Admiral of Naval Aviation Supply Depot in Philadelphia. After the war, she took time to be a homemaker, caring for her mother and being Mom to her wonderful daughters. She enjoyed serving as a Girl Scout leader, Sunday school teacher, and was a charter member of St. Stephens Lutheran Church in Feasterville. After moving to Huntingdon Valley, she became a charter member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. In 1999, Edna moved to Willow Valley.
Not only did Edna and Ray have a great marriage but were a successful business team, owning Manning and Manning, an executive search firm in center city Philadelphia. Edna served as vice president in charge of the female placement division. Upon semi-retiring, Edna and Ray purchased and operated a variety store and owned rental property in Ocean City, New Jersey. Edna loved to travel, enjoying many trips throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. Switzerland and Norway were her favorites. She also enjoyed winter vacations on the west coast of Florida.
In addition to her beloved husband, Edna is survived by daughters Joanne Yeager of Lancaster, Elizabeth Schoelkopf (Jake) of Mountville, grandson Scott Amey (Kerry), deceased grand-daughter Cheryl (Amey) Shea and two great grandchildren Erin and Hunter Shea.
The family would like to thank Caring Hospice Services and Lakeside staff for providing Edna loving care and comfort.
A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the Children’s Dyslexia Center, 213 W. Chestnut St., Lancaster, Pa. 17603.

Grammy was everything I could have asked for in a great-grandmother. Her and PopPop taught me lessons about life and love that I never would have wanted to learn from anyone else. Whenever we went to visit, we knew we would be walking out with some funny story we would all share later, even though she wasn’t trying to be funny at all. Whether she was making fun of how ugly my dad looked that day, or kept mistaking me for my Mom, she was always fiesty and had a fire that will continue to burn long after she’s gone. Although it’s sad we no longer have you here, I know you’re doing so much better. My mom needed some company up there, and I think right now she needs you more than we do. Keep my Mom company, and continue to love me and support me from the farthest of distances. I love you Grammy, and always will.
Love always, Erin

Although I never got to see Grammy as much as I would’ve liked to she gave me memories I will never forget. I loved her, and my prayers go out to her and Pop Pop. I love you Pop. I know Grammy will love it up there when she joins my mom and the rest of our family whom have passed
                                             Love you both, Hunter

Oh Mom, what beautiful memories the family has of you and your love.  We all have a heartful of experiences that showed your generosity and caring for others from Nana, Aunt Lillian, Aunt Yum Yum and so many others.  I still remember the difficulty I had with Cheryl’s potty training but after spending a weekend with Grammy and Poppop, she had no more mistakes.  Your recipes for creamed onions, sweet potatoes and sausage stuffing are supurb and will go on to future generations with Scott and Eddie both duplicating the recipe and the memories that they bring. We can laugh forever about you volunteering us to babysit Erin when she was 10 months old when Cheryl, Ed and Scott wanted to get away for a Cancun vacation.  Mom, you showed both your girls what it means to be strong and the family work ethic will also go on to your grandchild and great granchildren.  Bless you for all you did for us.  Love ya, Betsy

Grammy was the ultimate grandmother: filled candy jar, mint at the bottom of her oversized purse, great cook who overfed me as a growing boy, provider of long back rubs, and gambler of a few dollars on the Super Bowl who took the underdog so I could win a few bucks. Thanks for many great memories of family holidays, OCNJ, Pitt, and being there for every life milestone. You are missed and I’ll do my best to pass down your stuffing and creamed onion recipes. Scott A.

What special memories you must have of your beautiful mother.  You have been truly blessed having your mom for all these years (as I have been); her life must have been so enriched by the special love you have for her as a daughter.  I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.  May each day bring you some sunshine and joy as you hold dear in your heart your mother forever!  With deepest sympathy,  Linda Watson

My beautiful Mom.  Watch over us until we are all together again.  I love you…and I know you love me too.   Joanne
