Dr. Robert S. Snader, 93

February 25, 2013

Dr. Robert Snader, 93, of the Mennonite Home and previously of Marietta Avenue in Lancaster Township, died peacefully on February 25, 2013. Born in Terre Hill, PA, he was the son of the late Roman and Mazie (Frankhouser) Snader. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of nearly 62 years, Margaret Krall Snader in June of 2008.

Dr. Bob was a 1938 graduate of JP McCaskey High School and proudly served his country in the US Army during World War II. While serving as a Technical Sergeant with the 84th Infantry Division in Germany, he was awarded the bronze star with oak leaf cluster for his heroic service. After his discharge he used the G I Bill to complete college and medical school, graduating from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1952. He maintained an office on E. Orange St. with Drs. Heistand, Axelrod and Scott, specializing in family practice. He was particularly proud of the fact that he delivered nearly 1,000 babies over his three plus decades of practice. He was a past president of the Lancaster County Society of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons as well as the Lancaster Osteopathic Hospital medical staff.

Following his retirement from family practice in 1985, he worked for three years for the Center City Family Health Center, where he helped to train the Medical Students and Family Practice Residents of the former Community Hospital of Lancaster. He guided the young physicians in a manner that enabled them to provide a high level of compassion to their future patients, which is what made Dr. Snader so special to all of his own patients.

He enjoyed music, dancing, tennis and golf and was a long-time member of the Conestoga Country Club. In the past, he volunteered as the team doctor for Hempfield’s boys basketball team and also as an assistant coach for both the St. Leo’s boys and girls basketball teams. He and his wife were avid Phillies fans and loved attending sporting events of their grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He is survived by two children: Deborah Overbaugh wife of Joseph of East Hempfield Township, and Barbara Miller of Landisville. He has seven grandchildren: Dr. Robert Overbaugh husband of Kristen of San Antonio TX, Matthew Overbaugh husband of Kimberly of Lancaster, Christopher Overbaugh husband of Shannon of Noti, OR, Melissa Higgins wife of Lt Colonel Matthew of Goodyear AZ, Dr. Stacey Denlinger wife of Craig of Manheim, Bryan Stutzman of Winchester, VA and Samantha Risser wife of Todd of Winchester VA. He also has six great grandchildren: Cole and Morgan Overbaugh of Lancaster, Alden and Porter Overbaugh of Noti, and Reese and Jack Higgins of Goodyear. In addition, he has one surviving sister, Dorothy of California. He was preceded in death by a sister, Agatha Hoke.

The family would like to express its appreciation to the nurses and staff of the Mennonite Home for the excellent care they provided during his two and a half year stay at their facility.

Deb, Bobbie and Families,
Was so sorry to hear of your father’s death. He was one of my real heroes, a significant reason for my pursuing medicine. He was always my role model of how to be a caring, compassionate doctor. I hope I made him proud.
You are all in my thoughts and prayers. Am sure Mom and Dad and Dr Bob and Peggy are dancing together up in heaven!

To the dear Children and Grandchildren of my very first Doctor,
I can not begin to express my sadness on the passing of your Father and Grandfather. The world is an empty place today, without him. Decades later, I still remember vividly how he came to my bedside at home; I was a 4 year old with a very very high fever. An angel in the truest sense! My family was so blessed to have him in our lives. Thank you so much for sharing his kindness, his laughter and his medical world with us. We will be forever grateful.

My sympathy to the family. He was a wonderful man.He was patient and kind to everyone. He was a great family doctor to mother and myself and a great friend. I always enjoyed visiting with him and Peggy. We shared the same birthday. Joyce Gehman

Deepest condolences to you.  Dr. Snader was our doctor from 1967 until he retired.  He was always there when you needed him with caring and compassion.  Years back I would see him while shopping at Giant and always get a big smile and give him a big hug.  It took us awhile to find another doctor as dedicated and caring as he, but then we found Dr. Richard P. Frey, who was mentored by Dr. Snader, so we have that same dedication and caring passed on to us.  Like I said, Dr. Snader was a fine doctor and gentleman.  It is an honor to have known him.

Remembering this wonderful man ,Physician and friend I have known Doc Snader all of my life as he spent quite a bit of time at my Grandparents (V.J.and Edna Howett) home. My deepest sympathy to your family. Dr. Snader brought me into this world in 1958 and came to my wedding and danced with Mrs. Snader at my wedding (that was in 1980).  Such fond memories I have of your mother and father. They were both so kind to my parents, Audrey and Don Boughman and even came to their 50th Wedding Anniversary party we had for them in 1993. He was a great family physician to us! Thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dr Snader took wonderful care of both myself and my Grandmother. He was more like a friend then your Doctor. He was the best doctor I ever had. My Sympathy goes out to his Family.

We want to extend our deepest sympathy on the passing of Dr. Snader.  My mother, Luella Hall, worked for him many years at his E. King St. location.  My husband, John, was a patient and he helped him so much with his back problems.

When my mother passed away many years ago I received a lovely note from Dr. Snader.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Sincerely,
John & Dixie Smith

Pop, you were one incredible gentleman.  I am honored to have known you and been able to participate in family dinners with you.  You and your sparkling eyes will be missed. I loved your dad Deb and Barb.  My sympathies go out to the whole family.

I have great memories of this unbelievable man and physician. he once invited me to assume his practice when he was retiring but I decided instead to take another year of residency . I had the pleasure of learning a lot from him in his practice and he showed me the true meaning of mutual respect that he gave his patients and they gave to him. He was truly an exemplary reflection of  the osteopathic profession. it was a privilege to have known him and work with him! my prayers are with your family during this difficult time. Dr Rick Frey

My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time of loss….he was truly a wonderful person and there should be more gentlemen like he is remembered.
