November 18, 2016

Catherine Ann “Cathy” (DelPrete) Engledow, 66, of Lancaster, PA passed away on Thursday, November 18, 2016 at home after a determined effort to live with the complications and treatments for stage IV cancer of the abdomen.
Cathy was the wife of James Lee “Jim” Engledow and had recently celebrated 46 wonderful years of marriage on August 1, 2016.
Cathy was the mother of Nicole E. Matthews, Lancaster and Wells M. Engledow, Arlington, VA married to Lynne Hewitt Engledow with a son, Reid W. Engledow. Reid is the only grandchild for both the Engledow and Hewitt families, and held an especially close relationship with his Grandma Cathy.
Cathy was born in Elkhart, IN on January 16, 1950. The daughter of Donato “Danny” DelPrete and the late Florence (Troyer) DelPrete of Elkhart, IN, she was the number 2 child of 11 children born to Florence and Danny.
Cathy is survived by six sisters: Cecilia Jacobs, Elkhart, IN, Zita (Bob) Melvin, Bristol, IN, Therese (Jim) Kress, Indianapolis, IN, Germaine (Bob) Jados, Traverse City, MI; Agnes (Tom) Marcuzzo, Omaha, NE; and Desiree (Keith) Misciagna, Park Ridge, NJ. These six sisters will serve as pallbearers for Cathy. Cathy was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia “Birry” (Tim) Nicolini, Mishawaka, IN. She is survived by three brothers: Donato (Maria) DelPrete, Ocala, FL; Lucio (Mary Ann) DelPrete, Mishawaka, IN; and Vincent (Lisa) DelPrete, Granger, IN. In addition, Cathy is survived by 30 nieces and nephews.
Cathy attended Indiana University, Bloomington and Indianapolis, IN and graduated from Millersville University, Millersville, PA with a Bachelor of Art degree in Social Work with honors. Additional she earned her Master of Social Work degree from Temple University, Philadelphia, PA.
She was employed by Lancaster General Hospital, Lancaster, PA for nearly 25 years. She was the Trauma Social Worker and the Manager of the Social Work Department for the last 20 years. Her illness led to her early retirement from a role she dearly loved in medical social work. While having volunteered in many roles over her 46 years in Lancaster, during the last 2 years of Cathy’s illness, she had participated with a group of individuals from St. John Neumann Catholic Church to provide a weekly mass/prayer service for residents of the Lancashire Hall Nursing facility in Neffsville, PA.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, November 28, 2016 at 11AM from St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 601 E. Delp Rd. Lancaster, PA 17601 with Fr. Daniel Powell and Deacon Pete Jupin as celebrants. Interment will be held privately at St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery, Bausman, PA. To the Engeldow family, I worked with Cathy at LGH for many years. She was a great support to me and someone I could always turn to for help. I loved her dearly, though lost touch with her when I left LGH in 2010. I thought she had beat her horrible disease, but I guess that wasn’t met to be. Thinking and praying for you all. She is definitely one of God’s angels now.

I had the privilege of working under Cathy for several years as a social worker at LGH. She had such a good sense of humor and was always talking about the next place she and her husband were going to travel to. She will be greatly missed.

My deepest sympathies to all immediate and extended family members. I knew Cathy for about 20 years while working at LGH.  As the dietitian for the trauma unit, I worked with Cathy on a frequent basis. My fondest memories are the tales of travels and family that we shared with each other. Her devotion to her patients was clear to everyone and she was so well respected. It is no surprise to me that she was still volunteering during her illness. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this most difficult time

It breaks my heart to hear of Cathy’s passing.  Anyone that knew her knows how strong and determined she was about life and being there for her family and friends.  I had the pleasure of working with Cathy for many years at LGH, as she was my boss.  I have come to realize that I have learned so much from her.  Today when I manage my department, I often think “how would Cathy handle this”?  She was dedicated, loyal and fair.  She also supported me through some tough times in my own life and for that I will always be thankful.  She wasn’t just a boss, she was a coach, mentor and friend.
Jim, Nicole, Wells, Lynne and Reid-I am deeply sorry for your loss.  Cathy was an extrodinary woman and she talked so fondly of all of you.  I loved hearing her share about her vacations and time that she spent traveling to visit with you all.  She also was a very proud grandma.  She always shared pictures of Reid and she often asked for ideas for things to do with Reid when he was in town.  You all made her world!!!
God Bless,
Vanessa Clayton

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Cathy Engledow. What an amazing woman!  I had the pleasure of working with her for approximately 20 years as a team member in the TNU, and with the many individual patients we shared throughout the hospital.  She was knowledgable, organized, always energetic, friendly, and a joy to talk to on a personal level.  We shared many laughs, too, throughout the years, and there was almost always a smile on Cathy’s face.
Cathy was loved by the hospital staff members, as well as the patients she served.  I know she will be missed by all of us.  My thoughts and prayers go out to her husband children, grandson, family and friends.

My family and I are deeply saddened by this news.  I didn’t know Cathy well; however, she left a huge impression from the few times we shared company.  My daughter-in-law, Nicole Watson, worked with Cathy at LGH when she started as a social worker and loved her.  Nicole always spoke so highly of Cathy and the work she performed.  Nicole knew Cathy loved her work and always reached out to others. We felt blessed that Cathy was truly a remarkable role model for Nicole.  Our family would like you to know how much we appreciated everything Cathy did for Nicole and for the many times she reached out to her in friendship, kindness and love.  Our sincerest condolences to your family at this very difficult time. May you be blessed with strength and granted peace in the days ahead.  With deepest sympathy,  Linda and Rocky Watson
