Carrie Katina Speros, 64
Carrie Katina Speros, 101, died peacefully at Hamilton Arms on Wednesday, August 19, 2009. Carrie was the wife of the late James Speros, who died in 1980. She was born in Kos, Greece and was the daughter of the late Costas and Pareskeve (Pazakis) Codish.
Carrie came to the United States in 1915 and settled in Clarksburg, West Virginia with her family. In 1930, she moved to Lancaster to marry her husband James. Carrie and her husband were co-owners of the former Jim’s Café, a well known café located on the corner of N. Shippen and E. Frederick Sts. in Lancaster until 1980.
Carrie was a member of the Annuniciation Greek Orthodox Church and a member of their Philoptocos Society. She was very instrumental in helping to organize and start the Annual Greek Church Bazaar.
Carrie enjoyed cooking and spending time with family and friends.
Carrie is survived by her son, Spencer J. Speros, husband of Janet K. of Lancaster, two grandsons, James and Jonathon Speros, a step-granddaughter, Sherri Melamut, six great grandchildren, one sister, Gertrude Mylonas, of Mountville. She was preceded in death by one brother, Michael Codish and two sisters Maye Codish and Stella Weinhold.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Funeral Service at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 64 Hershey Ave. on Friday, August 21, 2009 at 10am with the Rev. Alexander Goussetis officiating. Friends may attend the viewing at the church on Thursday evening from 7-9pm and the Trisagion Service will be held at 8pm. A second viewing will be held at the church on Friday from 9-10am. Interment will take place from Conestoga Memorial Park. Memorial contributions in Carrie’s memory may be sent to the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. Arrangements made by Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home, 393-9661. I just wanted to extend my sincere condolences to the entire family. I remember my mom taking me to her house to visit her when I was a kid. She was always very kind, giving, and full of wisdom. She will truly be missed.
