Barbara M. Vulgaris, 68

Barbara M. Vulgaris, 68, of Lititz, went home to her Lord on Good Friday, April 22, 2011 at Hospice of Lancaster County. She was married to Thomas Vulgaris for 47 years. Born in Baltimore, MD, she was the daughter of the late Frank J. and Caroline M. (Zylka) Matousek.

Barbara graduated from Baltimore’s Eastern High School. She received and Associates Degree in accounting from Community College of Allegheny County, Pittsburgh, PA. She was an enrolled agent with the Internal Revenue Service since 1989.

She and her husband owned a small automotive painting business for 10 years in McKeesport, PA and Barbara later worked for a national tax preparation company and a Pittsburgh accounting firm. When the family moved to Lancaster County in 1987, Barbara joined the firm of Miller & Miller CPAs LLP as an accountant. When the firm merged in 2006 with Reinsel Kuntz Lesher, LLP, she continued her accounting career until her retirement in June 2009. Barbara valued her long-term client and co-worker relationships and loved working in the accounting and income tax fields.

Barbara was an active member of St. James Catholic Church, Lititz, where she had served on Pastoral Council, Finance Committee, the Social Justice Network and Eucharist Ministry. Far many years, she was Treasurer of the Lititz-Warwick Community Chest.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three children: son Thomas, husband of Tamera (Stoltzbach) Vulgaris, daughter Caroline V., wife of Martin R. Kempfe and daughter Christine V., wife of Matthew Brehm; four grandchildren: Thomas John and Taylor Marie Vulgaris and Eleni Rose and Jacob Brehm; her sister Frances C. Byan; brother-in-law Jack, husband of Dee Vulgaris; sister-in-law Karen, wife of the late Lawrence Vulgaris and numerous nieces and nephews. Barbara’s family was the center of her life. The gathering of family at holiday meals and Ocean City, MD vacations were so special.

Friends will be received Wednesday, April 27, 2011 from 6-8 PM at the Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA, with the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 8 PM. Friends will again be received Thursday, April 28, 2011 at St. James Catholic Church, from 11AM-Noon, with the Mass to follow at Noon, with The Rev. James O’Blaney CSSR as Celebrant. Interment in St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery, Neffsville. Please omit flowers. Dear family,

We wish to convey to you our deepest sympathy on Barbara’s death. She was our tax preparer for a number of years and we always appreciated the way in which she related to us as well as the care she gave in preparing our taxes.

Dear family,

Barb extended a welcoming hand to me as a newcomer two years ago and her friendship helped me find a home in our church family.  Her strong faith and trust in God has been an inspiration and I’ll always treasure the memories of her kindness and love. My deepest sympathy and prayers are with you.  May Jesus’ promises comfort you and give you hope of a joyful reunion in heaven.

Sincerely,
Betsy Bowser

I was truly saddened to see the news of Barb’s passing. My wife and I have known Barb since 1992 when I worked at Miller & Miller, CPAs in Lititz. We hit it off immediately when I joined the firm but that wasn’t hard to do with such a warm and loving person as Barb.

We’ve seen each other off and on over the past 20 years and Barb was always the same. She greeted everyone with a big smile and usually a hug.

No doubt she’ll be missed by all of you. Our hearts go out to you and we’ll keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

Hopefully all the wonderful memories of a life well lived will sustain you at this difficult time.

Craig & Regina Robinson

Our family was truly blessed having gotten to know Barbara over the years she prepared our taxes.  She was our accountant for 23 years and we watched each others children grow over the years.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of your family.
