Aspasia Papavasilion, 100

April 03, 2015

Aspasia Papavasilion, of Lancaster, just celebrated her 100th birthday on March 22, 2015. She passed away on April 3rd, 2015 at LGH. She was born on the island of Kos, Greece and was the daughter of the late Stamati and Zafarula Fournaris.

She lost her mother to influenza at an early age and lived with her grandmother and aunt along with her sister. She came to the United States with her sister as a teenager after her father settled in Reading, PA. They were introduced to America at Ellis Island.

Aspasia was preceded in death by her husband, John Papavasilion in 1982. She met John and they made their home in Lancaster. They were married on New Year’s Eve, December 31 along with her sister, Maritsa and her husband Michael, it was a double wedding celebration.

Aspasia was very involved with her church and was a charter member of The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church and the Philoptochos Society. She helped organize the first annual church Bazaar, which she worked for many years.

She was a very proud homemaker who raised three beautiful sons, Tom, Ernie and Bill. She loved to crochet and embroider beautiful tablecloths for family and friends. She was a natural entertainer and enjoyed hosting family events and dinner parties. She was very well known for growing the most amazing lemon trees and loved to garden with her husband in their Manheim Township home. Her Goddaughter Doreen and Chip Snyder have five of her cherished lemon trees for over 30 years and have been closely cared for since then. She also grew mandarin trees.

She is survived by two sons, Thomas J. Papavasilion, husband of Vasso, of Landisville, William J. Papavasilion, husband of Ricki, of Lancaster, three grandchildren, Jon, John, and Victoria, and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Ernest J. Papavasilion (who was a first chair violinist with the New York Metropolitan Opera for many years), a brother, James Fournaris and his wife, Stergia, a sister, Maritza and her husband, Michael Valudes, five grandchildren, Matthew, Mark, James, and twin boys.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at 10:30AM at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church 64 Hershey Ave. Lancaster, PA 17603 with The Rev. Alexander Goussetis officiating. A viewing will be held from 9AM-10:30AM at the church. Interment will be in Conestoga Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church or The Philoptochos Society, same address as the church.
