Anthony “Don” D. Gorman, 74

Anthony “Don” D. Gorman, 74, of New Holland, passed away on Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at Hospice of Lancaster County in Mount Joy.

He was the husband of A. Patricia Gallagher Gorman, with whom he celebrated 49 years of marriage this past August 19th. Born in Bethlehem, he was the son of the late Anthony P. and Elizabeth Kinney Gorman.

As a teacher, Don taught in the Coatesville School District from 1961 to 1993 starting as a 6thgrade teacher. He then focused on Special Education teaching at Gordon Jr High School and Scott High School until his retirement. Following his retirement, his love of education continued as he served as a substitute teacher in the Conestoga Valley School District at Brownstown and Smoketown Elementary Schools. Don was also a tour guide at the Amish Farm and House in Lancaster.

Don was a 1961 graduate of Kutztown State College.

He enjoyed reading, cooking, the outdoors and travelling. After his retirement, he and his wife Pat took numerous trips to various international destinations including Ireland, Russia, China, Portugal and Spain.  His very favorite spot to visit, however, was his own back porch where he could relax with a good book.

He had the gift of bringing out the best qualities of all those he met. This was especially evident in his teaching skills. Everyone he met was a winner in his eyes.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by the greatest pride in his life, his 3 children: J.P. married to Patty Gorman of Denver, NC, Jeralyn married to Bart Shattuck of Winslow, ME, and Tony Gorman partner of Jen Weber of Lancaster;  his 2 grandchildren Eric  married to Rose Carroll and Ryann married to Charles Mason and his sister Elizabeth Ferguson of Erie, PA. He was expecting his first great-grandchild in June.

Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in Don’s memory to Hospice of Lancaster County, 685 Good Drive, Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604-4125 or to the Eastern County Lancaster  Library, 11 Chestnut Drive, New Holland, PA 17557. Dearest Pat, and family,
No words can remove the pain you are all going through , but Don fought a tough battle and couldn’t have  done it without all of you.  I will be forever grateful you and DON were our neighbors and all Don did for Wayne during his illness.  Don loved his family and now, after meeting everyone he had every right to.  Pat, I will always be here for you and you never need to be alone.  We love you like family.  And I do thank God that Don is finally at peace!
Love,
Pat Barr

To Pat and your loved ones.I am sorry to hear you have lost your Don-I pray for you smiles of happy memories soon overcome your sadness.
From [Beth Sharp’s Aunt] Jacki-and my Ryan.

Pat,

I met you once at Don’s reunion for SS. Simon and Jude. The last time I saw him was at a Central Catholic reunion more than ten years ago. I have so many memories of Don from growing up. We were neighbors on Sixth Avenue and classmates from grade school through high school. At times we were more like brother and sister than neighbors. I think I told you that it was my mom who first taught Don how to jitterbug, something he certainly perfected on his own. I was truly sorry to read about his death and my sincere sympathy goes out to you and your family. Please extend those thoughts to Lisbeth, his sister, as well.

Daneen (Dani) Jones Phelps

Dear Pat, we were so sad to read about the loss of your wonderful husband. We were neighbors for many years & our kids grew up together. Please know our many thoughts & prayers are with you in this time of grief.

Sincerely,
Ted & Jackie Laverty

I was a teacher at Smoketown Elementary School.  It was an extra good day when Don was substituting on the fifth / sixth grade floor. He taught us all how to enjoy life. It was an honor and a pleasure to know Don.
