Ann C. Fallan, 86

January 09, 2016

Ann C. Fallan, 86, died peacefully on January 9th at the Courtyards at Brethren Village, Lititz, after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Joseph T. Fallan to whom she was married for 62 years. Ann was born in Schuylkill County, the youngest of three girls born to James P. and Ann (Flynn) Sheridan.

Ann grew up in Lost Creek and graduated in 1947 from West Mahanoy Township High School in Shenandoah. While working in the area, she was introduced to Joe by her aunt who thought he would be perfect for her. He took her out dancing and won her heart. They married and moved to Lancaster in 1949 when he began working for Armstrong. Ann worked as a secretary for Kamp & Godfrey, eventually leaving to raise her family.

While her children were growing up, Ann was very involved in activities at St. Anne Church and School in Lancaster. She was devoted to her family and cared not only for her children, but also for her parents when they retired and moved to the area. She enjoyed volunteering at the Lancaster General Hospital and socializing with friends from the church.

After Joe’s retirement, she embarked on a new chapter of her life. She learned to play golf and, as with everything she did, was determined to improve and do well. Not only did she enjoy the sport, but also the many friends she made and with whom she and Joe socialized. Even in recent years, when given the chance to take a putter in her hand, she maintained her beautiful form. Ann and Joe also traveled extensively during this time, visiting every contiguous state in the United States.

Family was most important to Ann. She loved to entertain, especially at the holidays. On Christmas Eve – if you were family or a neighbor or a friend or a friend of a friend – you were welcome. Nothing made her happier than being with her grandchildren. She happily attended basketball games, cross-country meets, concerts, etc., anything in which they were participating. Ann loved having them around her, listening to their stories and their laughter.

In later years, Joe and Ann moved to Brethren Village. Joe had a series of health problems and Ann began to show signs of dementia. As her disease progressed, she slowly lost her ability to communicate. Despite this, Ann remained very active and engaged with people. She was fortunate as she remembered everyone – maybe not by name – but by sight, greeting longtime friends and nieces with joy. When Ann moved to Terrace Crossings, her “family” grew. She was cared for, and loved, by so many devoted people. In particular, Jen Gerlach, became like a second daughter, able to be another voice for Ann. In these last weeks, when she was admitted to the Courtyards, she also received outstanding care from their staff. The family will always be grateful for their warmth and dedication.

Ann will be remembered for her smile, her laughter, and her compassion. She was unfailingly kind to people and never gossiped about anyone. Although dementia robbed Ann of her ability to communicate, it never took her sense of joy or her love of people. Ann is survived by her daughter, Joanne, wife of Bob Freund, her son, Patrick, husband of Diane (Brubaker) and her grandchildren, Kelly Freund, Katie Fallan, Jason Fallan (and fiancé, Melissa Berlot), Andrew, married to Brytnee (Wright) Fallan, and step-granddaughter, Meg Freund Reed, married to Scott Reed, as well as her long-time friend, Gladys McKerns and many nieces and nephews. Ann was preceded in death by her husband Joe and her sisters Mary and Eleanor.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 15, 2016 at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 601 East Delp Road, Lancaster, PA 17601, with Rev. David Danneker as Celebrant. A visitation will be held at St. John Neumann from 10:00 – 10:45 AM. Friends and family are invited to a luncheon following mass at Chives at Brethen Village, 3001 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, PA 17606. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family at St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery. Kindly omit flowers and send donations in Ann’s honor to Hospice & Community Care, 685 Good Drive, P.O. Box 4125, Lancaster PA 17604-4125.
