A. Isadore Gordon, 89

A. Isadore Gordon, 89, of Media, PA, died June 27, 2006, after an illness of several months.  He was a longtime resident of Lancaster.

Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Benjamin and Hani (Readerman) Gordon.  His wife of 49 years, Beatrice Sklarow Gordon, died in 1992.

Dr. Gordon graduated from Temple University in 1940 with a degree in chiropody (later called podiatry).  He was drafted into the Army in 1942, serving as a surgical technician in the European Theater of Operations.  After being discharged in 1946, he and Beatrice searched for a nice smaller town to set up his practice, and after much research, selected Lancaster. Through the years, Dr. Gordon built a thriving practice of devoted patients.  The fifth patient to enter his office was still coming to him when he retired in 1986.  He was known for sending people home feeling much better and laughing.

Dr. Gordon was a Fellow of the Academy of Ambulatory Foot Surgeons and held every office including the presidency in the Lancaster Podiatry Society.  He served on the board of governors of the Pennsylvania Medical Podiatry Association and was a member of the American Podiatry Medical Association.  He also served as an advisor to the Lancaster County Practical Nurses Association.

Dr. Gordon belonged to Temple Beth El, where he served on the board of directors, the religious committee, and was in charge of Monday evening services.  He was honored as “Man of the Year” in 1979.  He also was a member of B’nai B’rith, served on the board of the Jewish Community Center, and taught courses in Yiddish.

Izzy, as he was known to his many friends, enjoyed traveling with his wife, bowling, and playing bridge.  One of his greatest pleasures was people: he talked to anyone and everyone and was quick with a joke.  He was particularly fond of asking, “You know how I became a podiatrist?  I was at the foot of my class, so I naturally drifted into this profession.”

In 1995, Dr. Gordon moved to Martins Run Senior Residence Community in Media, PA.

He is survived by two daughters, Sherry R. Gordon of Boston, MA, and Judith J. Gordon, wife of William Bumgarner of Falls Church, VA, two grandsons, Benjamin Gordon Benulis and Brian Gordon Benulis, and a sister, Jeannette Ruday of Philadelphia.  Dr. Gordon will also be missed by his loving companion, Ruth Mirsky, of Lancaster.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, June 29th, at the Charles F. Snyder, Jr. Funeral Home and Chapel, Inc., 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA at 1:00 p.m., with Rabbi Stephan O. Parnes and Rabbi Meryl Crean officiating. Friends may pay their respects to the family on Thursday from 12 noon to time of service at the funeral home. Interment  service will be held at Temple Beth El Cemetery Lititz PA. The family will begin Shiva in Lancaster following the interment and continue on Friday through Tuesday at Dr. Gordon’s residence in Media PA, where visits may be made from 7 to 9 pm.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to: Temple Beth El, 1836 Rohrerstown Rd, Lancaster, 17601; SouthEast Health Services, 625 South Duke Street, Lancaster PA 17601; The Lewy Body Dementia Association, Inc., Post Office Box 451429, Atlanta, GA  31145; or Martins Run Senior Residence Community, 11 Martins Run, Media, PA 19063.
