After
a long battle with cancer, Frank Wint died peacefully at his home
in Denver, Colorado on Thursday July 21, 2011 surrounded by his
loving family.
Frank was born
in 1932 in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He was the youngest of four
children of Rufus and Dorothy Wint.
Frank
graduated from Allen High school in 1949. He spent two years at
Cornell University, where he studied chemical engineering. He
transferred to Franklin and Marshall College for his final two
years, graduating in 1953 with a degree in accounting. After
working for a year in New York City, he spent two years on active
duty as a Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. He was
based in Germany at the end of the Korean War. It was during his
final days of service that he met his future wife, Noreen Egan, in
London.
Upon return to
civilian life, Frank moved to Lancaster PA, where he started
working for Wall street brokerage firm Reynolds and Company (now
Morgan Stanley), and spent the rest of his 32 year career as a
stock broker.
Noreen and
Frank were married in 1956, and had three children, Gary, Susan,
and Frank. His son Frank Jr. died of cancer in 1982.
Frank was a
great humanitarian and had many friends from all walks of life. In
both his personal and business life, he was admired for his
honesty, kindness, and humility. He worked to improve the world
and the lives of others in ways big and small. After the death of
his son Frank, he and Noreen established a scholarship program at
Lampeter-Strasburg High School to provide funds for an annual
scholarship to two graduating seniors who had overcome challenges
and demonstrated strength of character. He and Noreen also
established an annual lecture series in Frank Jr.‘s memory at
Harvard Medical School to teach doctors from around the world the
latest advances in facial reconstructive surgery. After traveling
to Nepal in 1989, he sponsored his Sherpa, Rinji Lama, and his
wife Smiley to come to America and become citizens. This was a
determined effort that took six years.
Frank loved
the outdoors and worked tirelessly for the Lancaster County
Conservancy to protect and preserve land and water resources
around Fishing Creek and Tucquan Glen. In addition to working with
numerous local landowners to gain conservation easements or
outright donations of land to the Conservancy, one of his greatest
legacies was acquiring and donating the last privately owned
portion of land along Tucquan Creek, which ensured public access
for future generations for a continuous trail all the way to the
Susquehanna River.
Because of
their desire to live near their children and grandchildren, and
their love of the outdoors, Noreen and Frank moved to
Breckenridge, Colorado in 2003. Frank spent most of his free time
outdoors. He was an avid skier, fly fisherman, runner, biker, and
hiker, staying active until 3 weeks before his death.
Frank will be
deeply missed and always remembered by his survivors: his devoted
wife of 53 years, Noreen Wint of Denver, CO; his son Gary Wint and
daughter-in-law Alice Luknic of Denver, CO; his daughter Susan
Wint of Boulder, CO; his 6 grandchildren Emilia, Erin, Egan, Nate,
Jack, and Lucas; his sister Dottie Murray of Allentown, PA; and
the Lama family.
A celebration
of Frank’s life will be held at Nevin Chapel in the Old Main
building at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, PA at
11:00 AM on Saturday, Aug. 6. A reception at the Frey Atrium on
the campus will follow. Internment will be private. The family
will be holding another celebration in Colorado at a later date,
to be announced.
Donations can
be sent to the Murray-Wint annual lecture fund, Harvard Medical
School, 401 Park Drive, Suite 22W, Boston, MA, 02215; or to the
charity of your choice.
The family is
being served by Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, 414 E.
King St., Lancaster, PA. 717-393-9661. To send an online
condolence, visit SnyderFuneralHome.com. |

I am so sad for all of the family of Mr. Wint.
I have lots of fond memories of him, and of course the whole
family. Growing up in Media Heights couldn't have been better.
I'm sure he has a grand view of his remarkable life, no person
touched so many lives as him. I loved going trout fishing with
him, every time I bait my line with Velveeta, I will think of
him. My condolences to all.

From Ned in Ireland.
To the memory of Frank Wint -
The best and kindest person who ever came into our family -
I dedicate these few words.
They may be my words -
But they are my sister Noreen's thoughts -
Your loving devastated wife's thoughts ...
She who has been your rock -
Your lover -
And your forever friend.
Now Noreen begins the long hard wait,
Until she joins you.
Our love flies to her -
And to you, you dear good fellow, you very best of men.
Slan agut - goodbye to you.
For a gone darling....
For, deep within my deepest heart,
And carved upon my soul,
Are all the words you spoke to me,
Engraved for endless time,
And in the dark and lonely night
When stars are hard and cold,
I watch the window endlessly -
I watch the planets climb ..
Above the saucer of the hills -
Above the mountain mist ..
Into the black and inky sky,
Like rubies, burning red ..
And when beyond the Milky Way
Pale galaxies I see ...
I think of all the many ways
My .. heart .. loves .. thee ......
Dear Wint family,
My prayers are offered up for you. Mr. Wint was a kind and
generous man. I have many memories of the Wint family. What a
great time we had together. Sue and Gary are the best! I
remember long talks with the younger Frank before he passed
away. What a cool kid. I'm forever grateful to Mrs. Wint ( I
still can't say Noreen) for the wisdom she passed on to me. Mr.
Wint was a great husband and father. My heart goes out to the
family.

Dear Wint family,
I send my sympathy to your family on the loss of a wonderful
father and husband. I didn't realize what an accomplished man
Mr. Wint was until now. Whenever I talked with him as a
teenager and young adult he was always more interested in me and
what was going on in my life. He was sincerely interested in
the lives of others and that has left a lasting impression on
me.
Love and prayers,
Connie Wyble Kauffman
Noreen and Family,
We were saddened to learn of Frank's passing. Our memories
are fond and respect profound. His light will continue to shine
here in Lancaster and your beloved Colorado. We'd be willing to
bet that he and Frank, Jr. are fly fishing "up there" right
now!
With love,
Candy and Peter DeGreen
Dear Noreen, Gary, Sue,
Our hearts break for you and your family. Losing such a
wonderful husband, father, grandfather, friend is never easy.
We have so many fond memories of you as our best neighbors ever
on Driver Avenue, greeting us with doughnuts and lemonade on the
day we moved in, attending fun, fun parties, eating Frank's
fresh-caught trout, loving your garden and learning how to grow
a few things, the kids at the pool (and beyond), and your
profound loss after so much love and care of Frankie. You have
traveled many difficult roads, but always together, determined
and courageous. Know that spirit will continue as you grieve.
So disappointed we are away August 6, but hope to see you again
in Lancaster or Colorado. May God give you strength and peace,
especially now!
Love,
The McCabes

glowing example for us all.
With deepest sympathy,

When I lived in New York City, from 1988 until
2003, I was regularly welcomed by my cousin Noreen and her
husband Frank into their home in Lancaster Pennsylvania and
later in Breckenridge, Colorado. These escapes from the big city
were made so much more than just weekends away, by the warm
welcome I always received from both Frank and Noreen. Frank Wint
was always welcoming, always warm and always more than anxious
to share his love of the wide open spaces with me. Whether it
was in the hills around Lancaster, overlooking the Conestoga and
Susquehanna Rivers or on the slopes of the Rockies in Colorado
or even on our own humbler Slievenamon, back in Tipperary, those
were very special times, shared with and made possible by a very
special person, Frank Wint. He is gone from his beloved, "Red
River Valley", but his spirit, as in life, remains forever at
one with the special places of his own Mother Earth. It was my
privilege to have known Frank.
My thoughts are with you Noreen, Gary, Susan and your families.
With love to you all,
Michael Moroney.
To Noreen and Wint family
Words alone cannot express our deepest sympathy of
Frank passing away,a wonderful friend , a mentor and a father to
us.He was such a amazing man who always reached out to help
others, who cared for others and always believed "NEVER GIVE UP
WITHOUT A FIGHT".
Frank has touched the lives of many and I am proud to
say I was one of the fortunate ones.I was so blessed and honored
the day I met frank an Noreen 22yrs ago on a trek in the
Himalaya region of Nepal. That day changed my life and today I
and my family are here in the states thanks to this wonderful
family.Today I and my wife have a better life ,because of frank
we can give our kids a better future. He was always concerned
about our future, our finances and advised us in making right
decision, and we are in debt with his kindness, his love for us
and being our mentor in this journey of life.
Frank we miss your smile, your voice and your love for
life. Its been a hard journey losing him for he has left a void
in our lives, but no matter where he is ,he will always remain
close in our hearts for all the beautiful and wonderful memories
left behind in our hearts to cherish, and may these memories give
Noreen and Wint family all the strength ,comfort and peace
too.May god bless you and your wonderful and loving family.
love and prayers...

Dear Noreen, Susan, Gary, Alice and family,
You have our deepest sympathy on the loss of Frank, a great
man. It was both an honour and a blessing to have the
opportunity to spend even a small amount of time in the presence
of such a kind, welcoming, loving and inspirational man. His
warmth and sense of adventure and fun was immediately evident
from the first time I met him in Lancaster. I will always hold
dear the memories of his laugh, his wonderful smile, skiing,
cycling, chatting with him and of course the hot tub in
Breckenridge. It is no surprise that he chose to spend his life
with Noreen who mirrored his love, kindness, positivity and joy
for life and may your love for each other provide comfort at
this most difficult time in your lives. No doubt there are
lonely days ahead but the dept of your love will sustain you.
May Frank rest in the peace he so truly deserves alongside
Frank Jr and all our loved ones and may we all be reunited one
day.
