Thomas
"Ted" E. Smith, 92, of Lancaster, passed away surrounded by his
loving family, on Tuesday morning, April 12, 2011, at the
Mennonite Home.
He was the
husband of Doris Bassler Smith, with whom he celebrated 66 years
of marriage this past July 1st. Born in Baltimore, MD,
he was the son of the late Edgar P. and Ada W. Wilcox Smith.
Ted was a
chemical engineer, retiring from the Kerr Glass Co in 1984 after
16 years of service. Prior to Kerr being absorbed by Armstrong
World Industries, he had worked for Armstrong in the same capacity
from 1957 to 1968. He also had worked for the US Industrial
Chemical Co. from 1940 to 1954 and for Pittsburgh Coke & Chemical
Company from 1954 to 1956.
Ted earned a
BS and a Masters in Chemical Engineering from Johns Hopkins
University. He was also a member emeritus of the American Chemical
Society.
He was a
member of the First United Methodist Church in Lancaster.
In addition to
his wife, Doris, he is survived by his two daughters: Linda Ann
Walton of Camp Hill and Jean H. married to Warren L. Nelson of Bel
Air, MD; his 4 grandchildren Scott Walton, Christine Huge, Ryan
Nelson and Matthew Nelson, and by his 5 great grandchildren. He
was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Thomas J. Walton Jr.
Friends are
invited to attend Ted's Memorial Service on Saturday, April 30,
2011 at 11:00 A.M. in the chapel at the Mennonite Home, 1520
Harrisburg, Pike, Lancaster, PA. In lieu of flowers, contributions
