John
R. “Jack” Longenecker, 82, of Lancaster, died Tuesday, June 21,
2011 at Landis Homes. Born in Lancaster, Jack was the son of the
late Chauncey W. and M. Louise (Smith) Longenecker.
A 1946 graduate of J. P. McCaskey High
School, Jack attended Temple University, where he graduated with a
B. S. in pharmacy in 1950. A US Navy veteran of the Korean
Conflict, Jack served as a pharmacist at Philadelphia Naval
Hospital, and in Port Lyautey, French Morocco. Jack returned home
after his tour in the navy to begin his life-long pharmacy career
in the family business, Longenecker’s Pharmacy. Even though he
was diagnosed with M.S. while in the military, Jack continued
working in the family business until his retirement in 1980,
having shared his duties with his brother, Jim, and sister, Bette.
Jack was a life member, and was very
active in the Wheatland Sertoma Club, a 32nd degree
member of the Lamberton Lodge No. 476 F&AM, a member of the
Lancaster Co. Shrine Club, a member of Zembo Shrine A.A.O.N.M.S.,
Harrisburg, and a member of the Oriental Band.
He was a life-long member of St.
John’s Episcopal Church in Lancaster.
Jack was an avid sports fan who
enjoyed watching Penn State Football, and the Phila. Eagles and
Phillies games.
Jack is survived by a daughter, Anne
I. Davis of Vallejo, CA, grandson, Jeremy Davis of Napa, CA,
sister, Bette Forsythe, of Malvern, PA, and brother, James “Jim”
Longenecker, husband of Veronica, of Lancaster. In addition to
his parents, Jack was preceded in death by two sons, Curtis W. and
John Longenecker.
Funeral Services will be held
Saturday, June 25, 2011 at 11 AM at St. John’s Episcopal Church,
321 W. Chestnut St., Lancaster, PA with Rev. John W. Morris
officiating. A viewing will be held from 10 until 11 AM at the
church. Entombment will take place in Conestoga Memorial Park. In
lieu of flowers, contributions in Jack’s memory may be made to
National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Central PA Chapter, 2040
