Robert
B. Long, age 87, of 3001 Lititz Pike, Lancaster died August 29 at
Heart of Lancaster Regional Hospital after a brief illness. He was
born and lived in East Petersburg, PA for 75 years prior to moving
to Brethren Village. His wife of 55 years, Roberta Wendler Long
died in 2003. He was the son of Clyde L. and Ruth Bard Long.
Bob graduated
from East Hempfield High School in 1942. After being employed by
Armstrong Cork Company for a short while, he was inducted into the
Army Air Corp where he served 3 years. Returning to civilian life,
he entered Franklin and Marshall College and graduated in 1950. He
was employed by RCA for 35 years as a Materials Administrator. He
retired in 1986.
While a
resident of East Petersburg, he served on several East Petersburg
Boro committees. He was a charter member and past president of the
East Petersburg Lions Club. He was also zone Chairman of Lions
District 14D. When he was younger, he was active in as a volunteer
for the boy scouts, the East Petersburg Elementary School PTA, and
the fire company and participated in the East Petersburg Hiking
Club. He was a life long member of Trinity United Church of
Christ. He was a fifty year member of Manheim Lodge #587,
Lancaster Lodge of Perfection, Harrisburg Consistory, Zembo Temple
and the Lancaster County Shrine Club.
He and his
wife, Roberta enjoyed traveling and visited 47 states including
Hawaii and Alaska, traveled to Europe several times. After
retiring, they spent time on Anna Maria Island in Florida each
winter. Bob enjoyed visiting Ocean City, New Jersey with his
family for many years. He played bridge and enjoyed both golf and
bowling. He was an avid sports fan but especially loved to watch
Penn State Football.
Bob is
survived by his son Donald James, married to Jessica (Hoffman)
Long of Manheim, and his daughter, Gale Marie and her partner,
Karen Steffy, of Lancaster. He is also survived by two
granddaughters: Dr. Michelle L. Jordan, wife of Joshua J. Jordan
of Lancaster, and Patricia E. Hatfield, wife of Brad A. Hatfield
of Mt. Joy. He had three great grandchildren, Tyler and Bryce
Jordan and Ella Hatfield. A brother, Guy Long, preceded him in
death.
Friends will
be received on Thursday, September 1, 2011 from 1-2PM at the
Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike,
Lititz, PA, with the Memorial Service to follow at 2PM. Interment
will be private.
