Ruth
N. Heiss, 84, passed to her Heavenly home after a lingering
illness on Thursday, March 3, 2011 at Fairmount Homes Retirement
Community. She was the daughter of the late Martin and Lena E.
Peterman Heiss. She was lifelong resident of Lancaster until
moving to Fairmount Homes in July of 2009.
She attended
Lancaster City schools through 10th grade, then
transferred to Lancaster Mennonite High School and graduated in
1944. She was a 1949 graduate of Lancaster General Hospital School
of Nursing and was a life member of the Alumni Association. Ruth
worked at LGH from 1949-1956, then was a nurse in the pediatric
office of Dr. George W. Burnett for over 22 years. After Doctor
Burnett retired she returned to LGH, 2nd shift, and
worked 10 more years, retiring in 1989.
Although
nursing was her life work, she enjoyed other interest and attended
evening classes at Franklin & Marshall College and Lancaster
Theological Seminary. Ruth was an active member of Laurel Street
Mennonite Church. An avid reader, she had a large personal
library. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, braiding wool rugs and
quilting.
Ruth's family
was very important to her. Surviving are two sisters, Mary Jean
Heiss, Mt. Hope Church Home, and Sarah Ann Chubb (Harold),
Conestoga; sister-in-law Rose Marie (Null) Heiss, Conestoga; two
nephews, David M. Heiss (Cheryl), Lititz, and James M. Chubb
(Jennifer), Delaware; four nieces, Charlene M. Heiss, Conestoga,
Ruth E. Stoltzfus (Ray), Manheim, Rebecca E. Kreider (Eugene),
Bethel, and Deborah A. Miller (Mark), Abbotstown; and 20
great-nephews and nieces and 10 great great-nephews and nieces,
who where the joy of her life. Ruth's brother Martin Heiss, Jr.
preceded her in death.
A Viewing will
be held Sunday, March 6, 2011 from 1-2 PM and The Funeral at 2 PM,
with Pastor Janet Breneman officiating, at the Charles F. Snyder
Funeral Home & Crematory, 441 N. George St., Millersville, PA.
Interment in Millersville Mennonite Cemetery. Please omit flowers.
