Samuel
Handsman, 88, of Audubon Villa, Lititz, PA, passed away on
Saturday, March 26, 2011. Born in Monticello, NY in 1922, the son
of the late Morris and Rebecca (Eisner) Handsman, he was preceded
in death by his wife of 59 years, Mary "Meg" (Archibald) Handsman
(2002), and by his second wife Rachel Klinger (2008).
After
graduating from Delhi Technical Institute, Samuel was a lifelong
carpenter and member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters,
Local 19. He was head custodian at Monticello Central School
District and then head carpenter at Monticello Racetrack until
1988. After
retiring he continued to work as a carpenter in Lancaster.
A
Veteran of WWII with the Army Air Corps, Samuel piloted B-17's and
B-24's from 1942-1945. He served with the 779th Bomb
Squadron and the 464th Bomb Group in the European
Theater as a First Lieutenant, earning an honorable discharge.
Samuel will be
remembered as a generous man, always willing to help others. He
was very proud to have delivered milk for Max Yasgur, long before
the Woodstock Festival was held on Max's farm in Bethel, NY.
Samuel is
survived by two daughters, Maribeth Handsman, wife of William
Bushey, of Washington D.C.; Maryann Caldwell, wife of John, of
Lancaster, PA; two sons, Samuel Handsman Jr., husband of Kathleen
Romero, of Cornelius, NC and Russell Handsman, of Ledyard, CT; 11
grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren, all of whom he showered
with love.
A Memorial
Service will be held in Monticello this summer. In lieu of
flowers, contributions may be made to the Sullivan County SPCA,
P.O. Box 995, Rock Hill, NY 12775, or the American Cancer Society,
