Alfred
A. Fletcher, 92, passed away on Monday, January 10, 2011 at Lenox
Hill Hospital in New York City, NY.
He was the
husband of the late Elizabeth K. Kennedy Fletcher, who passed away
in 1998. He had also been married previously to the late Ruth
Fletcher. Born in New York City, NY, he was the son of the late
Joseph and Rebecca Freid Fletcher.
Alfred was
employed by the General Service Administration of the US
Government as a Building Manager, overseeing the Federal Court
House in Manhattan, the Veterans Administration Hospital, and the
United Nations Building in New York City, retiring after 30 years
of service. He had also previously worked at America Fragrance and
Flowers in New York. He was a graduate of the New York University,
with a BS in Business.
A US Army
veteran of World War II, Alfred had served in the Pacific Theater,
where he was awarded both the Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medals.
He served as a communications specialist, working closely with the
"Navajo Code Talkers", Native Americans who used their native
Navajo language in code, which could not be understood nor broken
by the Japanese armed forces.
Alfred was of
the Jewish faith.
Alfred is
survived by his 3 grandchildren: Robert K. Marker, Jr. of Mount
Joy, David R. Marker of Ridgefield, CT, and Elizabeth A. Mallin of
Columbia, PA and his 6 great grandchildren: Lauren, Leslie,
Jordan, Brandon, Robby, and Alex. He was preceded in death by his
stepson, Robert K. Marker, Sr.
