Dear Jeff and William,
Everyone at Shumaker Williams is sincerely saddened by the news
of Ruth's passing.
The following is a message that was sent to all employees today:
"It is with heavy heart that I must report of the passing of
Ruth Courtney.
Ruth first worked with our Firm as a law clerk, commencing May
21, 1990, and then as an Associate effective September 9, 1991.
She left us for two years ('93 - '95) to work for a firm in
Lancaster and then returned in 1995 until currently. She was
highly intelligent and respected in the banking mergers and
acquisitions field. She became a Class B shareholder.
During the last 10 years she struggled mightily, battling
cancer, but always responded willingly and with a good nature to
requests for her participation in a project.
She "lived for her son William" whom many of us have had the
pleasure of seeing grow into a fine young man. Our
thoughts and prayers are with her husband, Jeff, and son,
William."
We are sincerely sorry for your loss. She was a great woman, and
we will all miss her.
Keith
Sincerely Yours,
Keith Clark, Chairman
Shumaker Williams, P.C.
Dear Jeff and William:
I went to law school with Ruth and I have met Jeff a few times
and William when he was a wee lad. My husband is also Jeff and
we had lots of great times with Ruth at school - she had that
rare combination of great intelligence and great humor that was
just awesome. I think I last saw Ruth at our 10 year law school
reunion and it was great to see that she had not changed. It is
unclear from the obit what she died from, but I sincerely hope
that hers and your suffering was limited. I am only sorry that
I never got around to catching up with Ruth when I took a job in
Lancaster a couple of years ago. My sincerest condolences to
you both.

Dear Jeff and William:
I worked with Ruth years ago at Shumaker Williams. Ruth's
humor, sense of irony and intelligence are what I remember when
I think back to those days. She was special. Please accept my

with you and your family and bring you peace in this time of

Jeff And William,

are with you.

To my dear brother and nephew, Will:
I just read the obit; John Sullivan was kind enough to send it
to me. When I think of all of the joys and good times I shared
with you and Ruthie, there are several events which come to
mind. I hope to share them with you on Saturday when I call in,
to participate from Kentucky in Ruthie's life celebration. I
look forward to being with my dear family on Thursday, when I
arrive for a belated celebration of Ruthie's life. I loved my
sister-in-law and didn't tell her enough how much she meant to
me. I hope I made up for early years of taking life for granted
by telling her in the most recent years that I loved her, every
time that I was with her. Cancer robbed her of so much, but it
never robbed her of her enjoyment of life. She continued to
savor adventures and wonderful times with family and friends
right up until the end. I never really knew Ruthie the
attorney, I only knew Ruthie my sister-friend. I know she was a
true professional, and her professional career was impressive,
indeed, but her zest for living, her commitment to her family,
and her compassion are what I will remember best. I loved her,
pure and simple. I enjoyed our talks, especially in the last few
years, when her life became more fragile. She made me think, she
made me a kinder person, and she made me appreciate all that I
had. Thank you, Dear Ruthie, for the special gifts you gave me.
And thank you, Jeff, for being the most insightful, patient, and
loving caregiver I have ever known. Will, you made your mother
so very, very proud. Thank you for working so hard to show her
all that you could do and be, probably knowing that her life
would be cut short. I have an amazing family and I love you
all!
Love,
Donna

JEFF AND WILLIAM OUR THOUGHTS ARE WITH YOU IN
YOUR TIME OF SORROW. MAY YOUR MEMORIES BRING YOU COMFORT.
SALLIE & DAYNE BURROWS
Jeff and William,
As cousins we grew up together and then we went our separate
ways. The times we got together are always special ... to share
the laughter and joys and sorrows of being a family. It was so
good to see you and Ruth at your Mom and Dad's 60th wedding
anniversary. No matter how much pain she was in, Ruthie always
seem so stoic and at peace. She was a fine woman, mother, and
friend to many.
It is with much love and sympathy we share your grief.
God bless you and keep Ruthie in His loving grace.

Jeff, William and family
Though I'm an absentee cousin far away, your loss and our
concern for you remains. There are no easy words to say or hear,
only the wish that you have family and friends physically near
you to be of comfort.
