John H. Coldren

John H. Coldren, 79, of Lancaster, PA, passed away on Friday, January 7, 2011, at the Essa Flory Hospice Center.

He was the husband of Mary C. Collins Coldren, with whom he celebrated 54 years of marriage this past April 28th. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late William H. and Dorothy M. Reber Coldren.

John had worked for Armstrong Industries, Kerr Glass Manufacturing, and then Dentech at Armstrong, specializing in Design and Plastic Engineering. He had served as a Junior Achievement Advisor in Lancaster County. He retired from the Woodstream Corporation in Lititz where he had been a designer and draftsman.

John had run for several political offices in Lancaster County over the years with the Democratic Party.

He was a US Army veteran, serving in Germany during the Korean War. John was a Life Member and 4  time past Post Commander for the Mount Joy American Legion Post 185. He was also recognized as the longest-serving post commander at Post 185. He was a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5752 in Mount Joy.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and bowled in the Senior Bowling and No Tap Leagues at Leisure Lanes.

John is survived, in addition to his wife, by his son Robert C.  married to Debra Coldren of Lancaster; his 4 grandchildren, Kerri and Jaclyn Fitzkee, and Rebecca and Robert Coldren; his brother Ronald married to June Coldren of Lititz, and his 3 sisters Thelma Consylman of East Petersburg, Dorothy Weaver of Millersville, and Mary married to Bill Kirchner of Strasburg. He was preceded in death by his daughter Janet E. Fitzkee, his son John H. Coldren II, and his brothers William and Bill Coldren.

Friends are invited to gather for his memorial service on Thursday, January 13, 2011 at 6PM at the AmVets Post 19, 715 Fairview Ave., Lancaster, PA. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in John's memory to the American Cancer Society, 314 Good Drive, Lancaster, PA 17603.
