John
P. Burger, 82, of Lancaster, PA, passed away on Monday, January 3,
2011 at Lancaster General Hospital.
He was the
husband of Shirley R. Rieker Burger, with whom he celebrated 56
years of marriage this past May 3rd. Born in Lancaster,
he was the son of the late Philip A. and Teresa Klos Burger.
John had
worked in the environmental services department at Lancaster
General Hospital for 15 years, until his retirement in 1993. He
later returned to the hospital to work part-time for 10 years. He
had also worked in the family business, Burger Brothers Meat
Market for 18 years and also as a meat cutter at Buy Right.
John was a
member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where he was a member of the
Legion of Mary and the Holy Name Society. He enjoyed gardening and
especially spending time with his grandchildren and great
grandchildren.
He was a
veteran of the US Army serving in Germany during the Korean War.
In addition to
his wife, John is survived by his son Rev. Philip Burger of
Hershey, his daughter Teresa married to Loyall Mumby of Lancaster,
and son John F. married to Jennifer Burger of Vernon, CT; 5
grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and his sister, Mary
Crnkovich of Quarryville. He was preceded in death by his 3
sisters Sister Marcia Marie OSF, Carmelita Scheuchenzuber, and
Geraldine Crnkovich and his brother Clement Burger.
Relatives and
friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at St.
Joseph Catholic Church, 440 St. Joseph St., Lancaster, PA 17603 on
Friday, January 7, 2011 at 11AM. The family will greet friends
back at St. Joseph Catholic Church following the interment
services at St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers,
