Demetrios
J. Madonis, 92, of Lancaster, PA passed away on Sunday, May 16,
2010 at Hospice of Lancaster County Essa Flory Center. He was born
in Asfendiou, Kos, Greece to the late John and Maria
(Papadimitriou) Madonis.
Demetrios was
the husband of the late Stamatia D. (Hazangeles) Madonis who
passed away in October of 2009.
Demetrios was
a barber in Kos, Greece for twenty-four years before moving to the
United States. His first employment here in Lancaster was with RCA
for five years, C & D Battery Company of Leola for eight years,
and after retirement he enjoyed helping his sons at the House of
Pizza for many years.
Demetrios was
a member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church and Pan-Coan
Society.
To his family
and friends, Demetrios was known as "PaPa." He was also known as a
stoic man, a man who put his needs aside when taking care of his
wife for many years when she became sick. He made the impossible
happen through his caring and giving personality.
Demetrios
enjoyed cooking, gardening, growing vegetables, and socializing
around town. He was friends with many of the local farmers and was
known to bring pizzas to them when picking vegetables from their
farms.
He is survived
by his four children, Andriana D. Pikoulas, wife of Efthymios, of
Athens, Greece, John D. Madonis, husband of Sophia, of Lancaster,
PA, Michael D. Madonis, husband of Maria, of Toronto, Canada,
Christos D. Madonis, husband of Eleni, of Lancaster, eleven
grandchildren, two brothers, Theophilos Madonis, husband of
Anezoula and Angelos Madonis, husband of Anthoula, both of Sydney,
Australia. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Vasilios,
Konstantinos, Demosthenes, and Elias Madonis, and one sister,
Stergoula Papapostolou.
The Madonis
family would like to extend a special "Thank You" to Dr. Spencer
Phillips, staff and caregivers at the Mennonite Home (Lititz Run),
Hospice of Lancaster County, and the Office of Aging.
Funeral
Services will be held on Thursday, May 20, 2010 at the
Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church 64 Hershey Ave. Lancaster, PA
17603 at 10:30am with Rev. Alexander Goussetis officiating.
Viewings will be held at the church on Wednesday evening from
7-9pm with a Trisagion Service at 8pm and again on Thursday from
10-10:30. Interment will take place in Conestoga Memorial Park. In
lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Demetrios'
memory to the Annuciation Greek Orthodox Church or to Hospice of
Lancaster County 685 Good Dr. PO Box 4125 Lancaster, PA 17604.
