Clare
Maiers passed away peacefully October 12, 2009 in the presence of
her beloved husband Leo and two of her children. She was born
Amelia Clare Erhardt on April 24, 1922 on a farm near Bloomfield
Iowa, one of seven children born to Carl and Laura Erhardt. She
was preceded in death by sisters Margaret (Martin), Miriam
(Wilson), Lucille (Barker), and brothers J. Lindsey (Jeff) Erhardt,
J. William Erhardt, and Carl Frederick Erhardt. After high school
she attended training to become a beautician in Ottumwa, IA and
worked as a beautician for several years in southeast Iowa and
later at Hecht's Department store in Washington, D.C. She married
Leo Maiers on January 6, 1947 in Ottumwa and she and Leo had a
loving 62 year marriage that produced five children.
Clare was an
amazing wife to Leo and wonderful mother to all of her children
and her kindness and caring for others will be dearly missed by
all who knew her. Clare had a great love of reading her entire
life, and she was valedictorian of her high school class of 1939.
She imbued in each of her children the importance of education and
made sure all attended college. After Clare and Leo retired, they
volunteered for Meals on Wheels for thirteen years, delivering
meals to elderly patients. She particularly enjoyed spending time
with her seven grandchildren and fulfilled the role of grandmother
with patience and love.
Clare is
survived by husband Leo Maiers (Lititz, PA); sons John Maiers
(Alameda, CA); James Maiers (Manassas, VA), Paul Maiers,
(Alexandria, VA), Robert Maiers (Lititz, PA); and daughter Maria
Maiers (Lancaster, PA). She is also survived by seven
grandchildren: David Maiers, Michelle Maiers, Megan Maiers,
William Maiers, Clare Maiers, Deborah Maiers, and Isaac Maiers.
