Stamatia
D. Madonis, 86, of Lancaster, PA passed away on October 1, 2009 at
the Lancaster General Hospital. She was born in Asfendiou, Kos,
Greece to the late Rev. John and Andriana (Keares) Hazangeles.
Stamatia is survived by her loving husband Demetrios J.
Madonis. They were married in Asfendiou, Kos, Greece on November
12, 1950.
She was a member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church
and was a strong believer in her faith.
Stamatia moved to the United States in 1968 to find
opportunity and to be with her family. Her first job was at the
Sun Restaurant, Lancaster City. She then was employed by St.
Joseph Hospital and Lancaster General Hospital.
She was a member of the Pan-Coan Society and the Philoptochos
Society. She became well known for her famous Loukoumades at the
Annual Greek Food Bazaar where she volunteered each year for the
church. Stamatia loved cooking, knitting, telling stories, was
known for her hospitality of family and friends, had a wonderful
sense of humor, and loved people in general.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons,
John D. Madonis, husband of Sophia, of Lancaster, Michael D.
Madonis, husband of, Maria, of Toronto, Canada, Christos D.
Madonis, husband of Eleni, of Lancaster, one daughter, Andriana
D., wife of, Tim Pikoulas, of Athens, Greece, eleven
grandchildren, two brothers, Harry Hazangeles and Pete Hazangeles,
husband of, Areti, both of Lancaster, many loving cousins, nieces,
and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Angelos
Hazangeles, of Greece and a sister Christina Hazipetros, of
Lancaster.
The Madonis family would like to thank Stamatia's caretakers
Beverly and Carmen for their care and support, Dr. Mohler and a
special thank you to Dr. Spencer Phillips and staff at Lancaster
General Hospital.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the
Funeral Service on Monday October 5, 2009 at 11am from the
Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church 64 Hershey Ave. Lancaster, PA
17603 with the Rev. Alexander Goussetis officiating. A viewing
will held at the church Sunday evening from 7-9pm with a Trisagion
Service at 8pm and a second viewing on Monday at the church from
10-11am. Interment will take place at Conestoga Memorial Park.
Memorial contributions in Stamatia's memory may be made to the
