The Dash Poem

I read of a man who stood to speak
At the funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
From the beginning to the end.

He noted that first came the date of her birth
And spoke of the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the DASH between those years.

For that dash represents all the time
That she spent alive on earth
And now only those who loved her
Know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not, how much we own,
The cars, the house, the cash,
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard;
are there things you'd like to change?
For you never know how much time is left
that can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough
to consider what's true and real
and always try to understand
the way other people feel. 

Be less quick to anger
and show appreciation more. 
Love the people in our lives
like we've never loved before. 

If we treat each other with respect
and more often wear a smile,
remembering that this special dash
might only last a little while.

So when your eulogy is being read
With your life's actions to rehash
Would you be proud of the things they say
About how you spent your dash?

Charlotte's dash is a reflection of God's perfect love.  Praise GOD. 

Our deepest sympathies are with the Chiccarine and Crnkovich families.  She is resting peacefully with our Heavenly Father. We will pray that both families stay strong and we will all miss Charlotte.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and the family.  We have nothing but fond memories when we were neighbors and some of the adventures we shared.  I remember how the whole family awaited Charlotte's return from Medjugorje with great anticipation; and when she arrived everybody ran out of the house - with the last person out shutting the locked door.  I'll never forget falling through the upstairs window from the ladder to get into the house.  Someday we will all be laughing together about that story - and others.

I am sorry I never met your wife and I was truly moved by her obituary in the Lancaster paper.  I believe she was the person the good Lord wants us to be and I have no doubt she is in the hands of the Lord.  I have a good friend whose wife died of ALS and I know how difficult that disease can be.  May you always cherish the 32 years you had together.  May God Bless you and your family in this difficult time.  Please call us and come and see us, if you ever get to State College.
