John A. Henkel

John A. Henkel, 81 of  Lancaster, died Friday, April 28, 2006 at Lancaster General Hospital emergency room.

Born July 10, 1924, in Lancaster, he was the son of the late A. John  and Elizabeth Zimmerman Henkel. John was the husband of June M. Vitale Henkel who died March 11, 2006.

Mr. Henkel was assistant claims manager of Armstrong for 40 years, retiring in 1989. He graduated from Lancaster Catholic High School in 1944 and  Mount St. Mary’s University with a BS degree in Business Administration in 1950. Mr. Henkel  served in the US Army during World War II in the Anti Aircraft Artillery Battalion as a sergeant.  

A member of St.  Philip the Apostle Catholic Church, he participated in the Men’s Club and Guys and Dolls Senior Citizen  Club. He was a 3rd degree Knight of Columbus. John volunteered with Bingo at St. Anne’s Retirement Community.

 Surviving is a son, David M., husband of Ann M. Wiggins Henkel of Landisville; a grandson, Michael A., husband of Amy Brown Henkel; a granddaughter, Sarah A. Henkel; fiancé of William Traphagen; a sister,  Mary Elizabeth Rieker; and a brother, Eugene J., husband of Mary Ann Reed Henkel. He was preceded in death by a sister Anna Marie Gallagher, 

Funeral services will be held at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church, 2111 Millersville Pike, Lancaster , PA, on Thursday, May 4, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. Interment in St. Joseph  New Catholic Cemetery, Bausman, PA.  A viewing will be held at the church from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Thursday. Contributions may be made in John’s memory to the American Cancer Society, 314 Good Drive, Lancaster, PA 17603.
